Tacos Felix

Nothing Beats a Great Taco Stand

One of our favorite places for tacos is Tacos Felix in Comonfort, Guanajuato. Comonfort, also known as Chamacuero, is a small town about 20 minutes from San Miguel de Allende.

We can get good tacos a couple of minutes from home but we will often make the drive to Comonfort just because the tacos are so damn good. The town has many great taco stands but it is actually best known for its gorditas which we need to share in a future post.

How good do these look?

Notice that the plate is covered with a plastic bag. That’s because most taco stands don’t have running water to wash dishes. So in order to serve the food hygienically they place the plate in the bag.

A new bag is put over the plate every time a new customer is served. It’s really quite clever.

Everything Ready to Go

Today they are serving four types of tacos: longaniza, which is a type of sausage, cabeza, which is head meat, costilla, which is rib meat and bistec, which is grilled beef. Tacos are only served on corn tortillas. It is extremely rare in this part of the country to find tacos served on flour tortillas.

Mexico is a land of street food

Street food is an important part of the culture in Mexico. To me, it’s one of the best parts about living in Mexico. People from all walks of life visit the street vendors many times each week. When you visit Mexico you have to eat on the street to truly gain a feel of the culture.

Happiness on a plate

Great salsas are critical and Tacos Felix delivers. Their red salsa is out of this world. Of course, it’s homemade.

Tacos Felix is located on the corner of Calle Magisterial and Calle Luis Cortazar in Downtown, Comonfort.

A Little Info on Comonfort

Comonfort is a very pleasant town that is worth a visit. Although it is only 20 minutes from San Miguel de Allende its personality is completely different. San Miguel is an internationally known tourist town with lots of action. Comonfort is for locals and operates at a more relaxed pace.

Indeed taco stands rule in Mexico, a lot of my friends are afraid of street food there but they are just missing some of the best eats there is. They often stand there and watch as I dig in… they are indeed missing out. This place sounds amazing and I will make sure and add it to my list of places to go next trip down to San Miguel.
